The Emerald Azzurra is scheduled for January 2022 and Emerald Cruises has appointed two key positions on board, according to a press release.
Jonathan Edwards will take the helm of Emerald Azzurra in his role as captain, while Petros Zarpanely will lead the ship’s department as hotel manager.

Captain Jonathan Edwards joins Emerald Cruises after nearly 20 years with Holland America Cruise Line. Raised in a naval family, Edward has always had a close connection to the sea, sailing Laser boats in competitive races as a child. In 1998 he enrolled at Warsash Maritime College as a sea cadet and then joined the Tall Ships Youth Trust aboard the Stavros. S. Niarchos and Prince William, teaching all age groups about team building aboard square rigged yachts. He joined Holland America in 2003, and most recently Captain Edwards sailed on Scenic’s Discovery Yacht Scenic Eclipse while cruising in Saudi Arabia and the Red Sea.
When not at the helm of a cruise ship, Edwards finds himself in the peaceful countryside of Gloucestershire, England, where he resides in a small village with his wife and two young children. Together they enjoy endless walks through the woods and fields with his most loyal companion, Skye, a Duck Tolling Retriever from Nova Scotia.
Petros Zarpanely, a cruise industry veteran with 25 years under his belt, joins Emerald Cruises as Hotel Manager where he is in charge of all hotel services including bars and restaurants, cuisine, housekeeping, laundry, customer services, shore excursions and onboard entertainment. Originally from London, he was educated at the London Institute where he majored in hospitality and hotel management, then continued his studies at Cornell University School of Hotel Administration and
Hotelschool of Lausanne. After spending time working during his studies for several luxury hotels in London, he decided to join the cruise ship world at a very young age, moving from a bar waiter in 1994 and into several positions as Food & Director. Beverage in various international companies. He also has experience working for cruise lines in shore-based hotel operations, ship management and recruiting. With its professional and dedicated team of 68 people from 17 different countries, Zarpanely is committed to doing whatever it takes to ensure that Emerald Azzurra’s guests cherish every moment and memory aboard the new superyacht.
