7 out of 29 women arrested for hotel gambling in Delhi

Ahead of Diwali, Delhi police arrested 29 people, including seven women, for their alleged involvement in gambling after raiding the banquet hall of a hotel in the capital’s Punjabi Bagh early on Sunday.

Police said more than Rs 58 lakh and 10 decks of playing cards were recovered.

According to the police, they received information from a source on Saturday about the “large-scale gambling” that had taken place over the past five to six days at the City West End Hotel on Club Road in Punjabi Bagh.

DCP West Ghanshyam Bansal said a police team raided the banquet hall around 1.30am on Sunday.

“When staff arrived at the banquet hall on the first floor of the hotel, a total of 29 people were found playing with cards on different tables and money lying in the middle of them. They were all apprehended. It was found that the hotel manager or owner charged Rs 2500 per person for allowing the hotel premises to play gambling activities and serve food and snacks. Other legal proceedings are initiated against the management and staff of the hotel for having transformed the hotel into a gambling den. CCTV footage of the hotel from previous days is also being analyzed. Further investigation is ongoing,” Bansal said.

The defendants included residents of Delhi and Gurgaon, police said, adding that a case had been registered under Sections 3 and 4 of the Delhi Public Gaming Act at Punjabi Bagh Police Station.
